Planning your Lithuania student visa and residence permit

If you are planning to study in Lithuania as an international student, receiving your university admission is only one part of the process. Depending on your nationality, length of study and individual circumstances, you may need to complete immigration procedures that allow you to enter and legally reside in Lithuania during your studies.

The process can involve your university admission documents, passport, proof of sufficient financial resources, accommodation information, health insurance and other supporting documents required for your particular application. Students coming from outside the EU should carefully check which immigration procedure applies to them and begin preparing well before their intended arrival date.

GP Educations can support you throughout this process, from understanding the steps relevant to your situation and preparing your document checklist to reviewing your application documents and helping you stay organised before submission. Immigration decisions remain entirely with the Lithuanian authorities, and requirements should always be confirmed against the latest official information.

What to check before applying

Start by confirming your admission to a recognised Lithuanian higher education institution and checking the immigration requirements that apply to your nationality and programme. Prepare your passport and university documents early, and check whether you need evidence relating to finances, accommodation, insurance or other circumstances.

You should also plan for the complete cost of studying in Lithuania, including tuition fees, accommodation, everyday living expenses, health insurance, travel and applicable immigration fees. The Lithuanian Migration Department currently publishes a reduced general-procedure state fee of €80 for a temporary residence permit application for a foreigner admitted to an eligible Lithuanian study programme, but fees and procedures can change.

GP Educations can help you organise these requirements, identify documents that may still be needed and prepare for the next stage of your study journey.

Official sources

For admission requirements, tuition fees and programme-specific information, always confirm the details directly with your chosen Lithuanian university. For Lithuania student visa, temporary residence permit and immigration requirements, use the Lithuanian Migration Department and its MIGRIS system as the authoritative sources.

Procedures can change. For example, Lithuania has recently changed where applications can be submitted through external service providers, and further changes take effect from 1 November 2026. This is why immigration information should be checked again immediately before applying rather than relying on an older guide.
